I‘ve had people ask why I would have a Weblog for my consulting practice. For bloggers, I think the answer is pretty obvious. However, for those new to Weblogs it may seem like a waste of time or an enormous risk. I want to take a minute and frame why I think the Common Craft Weblog is a perfect tool for my goals as an online communication planner.
In starting Common Craft I knew that a key to future success was enabling potential clients to feel connected to me- to give them a way to get-to-know me and my perspective, experience and skills (I think this is true for many businesses). I figured that if a potential client could have daily access to my writing, they might become clients or part of my network.
This is the value of the Common Craft Weblog to me- allowing people to get to know me and my work over time. The Weblog helps me connect everyday.
This is the 129th entry of the Common Craft Weblog. These are 129 examples of my work for the world to see. These are 129 ways for me to make connections with the folks in my niche. These are 129 chances for me to show folks what I think. These are 129 chances for me to practice what I preach. These are also 129 chances for me to be wrong, look foolish and practice humility. In sum, they represent my professional life in a way no other resource can.
I’m just getting started, but so far the results have been mostly positive. I’ve been contacted multiple times with leads and I’ve developed a small readership via the Weblog. While I view the Weblog strategy as an experiment, I couldn’t imagine going back to a static web site.
