R.I.P Amos, Our Faithful Mascot
By leelefever on September 23, 2009 - 5:59pm
It's a sad day at Common Craft headquarters. Our 15-year-old dog Amos passed away today.
I picked him from a litter of puppies in the back of a pickup truck in Boone, NC in 1994. Since then he was a constant source of love in our lives. They don't make 'em better than him - we were lucky have him for so long.

See Having an Old Dog for a bit more about Amos.

Condolences
What more can I say.
Our walk-in cat died in 2007. In 2009, another outdoor cat started coming close to our home but remained too shy to greet us. We picked up another cat from the animal asylum this April.
condolences
I'm so sorry to hear of Amos's passing. My heart and thoughts are with you.
So Sorry For Your Loss
So sorry for the loss of your precious Amos. Dogs are the best - they love you no matter what, they love you well, and they don't let life get them down. Hoping you take comfort in your memories of him and knowing he's roaming the happy hunting grounds of Heaven as his most youthful vigorous self. God bless you!
Faithful friends
Loosing an old friend is as hard as it gets - I lost 2 last year, and another doesn't have very long to go...
I always try to focus on how much happiness they so unconditionally bring into our lives!
I'm sorry for your loss!
I'm sorry for your loss! Rest in peace Amos. I know you are torn up about this. Our companion animals are so loving and loyal. I think that for all the ways he's enriched and filled your lives, you did the same for his.
so sorry
so sorry, lee and sachi, to hear the news. amos was in good loving hands and home for so long.
RIP Amos
My condolences. It must be a terrible feeling when u lose a long standing companion. May Amos RIP!
Though I never reared a dog I know the passion people - like my niece - have for dogs. After a traumatic separation following a failed marriage she cd find solace only in her pet. One observation she made - "dogs love unexpectingly. dogs dont cheat".
We humans can learn from them...
My commiserations again
Very sad. My thoughts are
Very sad. My thoughts are with you guys.
So Sorry
My wife and I take in pets all the time, usually older ones that don't have a chance of adoption at the shelters. Over the last 10 years we've been married, we've lost six dogs and each has been a sad experience. Some were with us for 10+ years (we had a few when we met) and others were only a short time since they had health problems already.
My thoughts are with you guys.
Requiescat in pace, Amos
Everybody who has every had a pet understands the heartache. Very sorry for your loss.
condolences
I am so sorry for your loss.
So sorry for your loss. We
So sorry for your loss. We lost one of our dogs last year very tragically and though it gets better over time, the pain never quite goes away. My very best thoughts to you and yours; and at least you know Amos is in a much better place than we are.
Condolences
So sorry to hear this, as a pet owner of 5 dogs and 1 kitten, I know it is hard to go through. They are a part of our family.
Last time we lost one, I went and got 2 pups the next day. It helped my kids heal as they took care of another one.
(((hugs))))
Farewell Amos
My thoughts and condolences are with you. I am so sad for your loss. And Amos looks like such a love bug. May his loving spirit always be with you guys.. HUGS.
AMOS
Poor ol' pup, I am so glad you had so many good years..lucky dog to have such caring people as best friends. RIP
Thanks so much
Thanks so much for your kind words, everyone. A friend told me once that the reason they don't live very long is because you're supposed to have a lot of them. There will only ever be one Amos, but we're dog people. After some time, we'll be ready for another one.
A poem
This is not the best translation of Pablo Neruda's poem, "A Dog Has Died" but it's the best I could find. I hope it explains what I want to say better than I could.

Sorry for your loss
So sorry to hear about Amos--I was glad to have met him last January.
Amos
What a tribute to a special member of your family. Thank you for sharing his story and giving him an honorable tribute. Leslie
I'm sorry
I'm sorry to hear about your loss! I remember reading your post about Amos when you wrote it a year or so ago. And I'm glad you were able to enjoy your old dog for a little bit longer. Dogs are family...and I know this is tough!
Good bye, Amos.
I'm sorry to hear about it. Reading this post brought tears to me. I lost my dog 2 months ago. The way you wrote about Amos sounded so much like my dog, Franky. To date, my hubby has not gotten over it yet. As for me, I know Franky and Amos have gotten to a better place and watching us from there. Hopefully, we all can meet them again. :-)
Take care!
RIP Amos
He's just on the other side of the fence, frisky and full of vinegar, having the time of his life. He knows you love him and he loves you still, and he waits patiently to greet you when you finally come through the gate.
:(
Peace in your heart knowing that your companion is in a wonderful place.
Amos and Coco
My own old dog with smelly breath will soon meet Amos and I know they will be buddies. I'd love to be a fly on the wall and hear the stories they'll share of the owners they'd selected while on earth.
God Bless.
Amos
I avoided reading your post for a couple of days now, fearing I'd become a blubbering fool, as I have a 14 and half year old lab, Calle. She has been dubbed, the "Energizer Bunny" by her vet. Each day is precious; our dogs give us so much and ask for so little in return. My kids have been raised by our dog - learning loyalty, commitment, unconditional love, and all the other really important lessons of life. We know the hardest lesson is to come one day in the not so distant future, but until then Calle gets doted on by all, and LOVES every second of it. I believe we gain from our losses; Amos left you richer...
doggies
I am so sorry to know about the loss of your puppy. He was beautiful and I'm sure you'll miss him like mad. I lost my Golden a year ago - she was a 15-year old crankyboots who stole my heart. Loved that dog. I feel for y'all. Here's to Amos.
Thanks for sharing these
Thanks for sharing these experiences. I have laughed and wept as I read many of your postings. My old girl, Freedom, will soon be 17. She has been a most loyal companion for 16 years. She is deaf and very arthritic but still seems to have the will to live. My vet assures me she is not in pain. I still worry every day about knowing when the right time to let her go is. I certainly don't want to keep her on this Earth just to make myself feel better but I don't want her to go until she's ready. So difficult. :(
So sad! I wrote this haiku
So sad! I wrote this haiku in memory of Amos and my own Radar who died, aged 14, last year
Dog’s breath, grey muzzle
That look, that tail wag, ever
happy to love us
Amos
Looks like a cool dog. sorry for the loss.
Amos & Amy
My bro called me 'Amos' as a child so feel a particular affinity toward this pooch, and your loss. (just 'tweeted' you a couple of my posts on resources/recovery) Be gentle with yourself...The sting sneaks up when you least expect it. (like now, looking at Amos' face & missing my "golden oldies") sigh. http://j.mp/3R945x
Aww sorry to hear that. I
Aww sorry to hear that. I know how much you missed him while you were away.
I'm so sorry
I lost my dog of 14.5 years last Saturday, and I understand the loss. Every day was one more gift from God, and now life is a little different. Our prayers are with you.
Amos
He was an old puppy! I am reminded of a vet I was taking my 15+ yr old puppy to in a small town in Kansas. When I said how old he was, the vet said, "you gotta love someone a lot to stick around that long." And I'm sure Amos did.

So sorry you lost your Amos. Thank you for sharing your story. My best thoughts to you both, and may time heal your aching hearts.
A Sad Memory to Remember
That is very sad. I remembered the time when our dog "Adopted" (we named him Adopted because, she just came to our house and became or pet dog, we don't know who's the owner) was hit by a rushing truck and died. I honestly cried of losing her. Until then, I never had a dog that have been closed to me as what Adopted and me had.

The Power Of The Dog by
The Power Of The Dog
by Rudyard Kipling
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But...you've given your heart for a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!);
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart for the dog to tear.
We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long--
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
So sorry ...
So sorry ... having a dog (or any animal) around at work is wonderful, I know. I'm sure everyone misses Amos - your team and even customers. ~ Sandee (and my 6 cats and 18 fishtanks!).

So sorry to read about your loss
I too have lost a loved pet and friend, and know how precious the memories are.
Being out in nature is still my greatest comfort.
a big hug to you and your family.
Sorry
to hear of your loss. There's nothing like suddenly finding this big hole in your life which used to be filled by ... (Amos in your case, Poppers in mine). Decision now is to decide how to fill that hole - more work or another pet? Only you can decide that. We went for another dog already knowing that Poppers wasn't going to be with us long when he came from the rescue centre - it was a lot harder to decide when we lost those we'd had from pups as you have had Amos. Thinking of you.
Sorry to hear that
I feel your loss... My faithful companion Brandy past away this year after 12 years with my family.
He had a good life with you, this is the most important thing. Maybe after you let go, you can open your heart to another dog.
