It appears that we're approaching a time where Internet users will have a simple standard for easily signing into web pages. It's called OpenID and the AOLs and Microsofts of the world are getting behind it. What is OpenID? I was just talking to Boris and he did a little more digging on Dell's IdeaStorm site. As it turns out, the application is provided by Salesforce.com and produced by CrispyIdeas. Check it out, this is the same type of site, but designed for Salesforce.com. Dell's Ideastorm is a branded version of 3rd party software, which means that we're likely to see a lot more organizations take notice. What's interesting about Dell's new IdeaStorm? 1. It's a social site that's not a message board or a blog 2. It enables any member to post a new idea for Dell to act upon 3. The idea is the "currency" of the site 4. It relies on Digg-style "promotion" of ideas to increase the visibility of popular ideas 5. Action on the part of Dell is (supposedly) built into the system. 6. Dell is taking a significant public-facing risk (yay!) right on the heels of Michael Dell coming back to the helm.... We need more bloggers like Sean O'Driscoll, who recently stepped into the fray. Community is his job - he lives it everyday. He's the GM of Support Communities and MVP at Microsoft. I dig Twitter, really I do. It's a time suck and guilty pleasure at the same time. However, I think Twitter people need to realize a couple of things: Point 1. Twitter is not for conversation in the way an IM is for conversation. When you "reply" to a twitter update, usually in the form of "@ friendname: message" you are spamming your friends with worthless crap (I have been guilty of this too, btw). Boris asked me this question recently and it made me think. In fact, I got lost this morning down a rabbit hole reading about people who are most definitely members of the Flickr community.
