Very nice resource, folks - congratulations!
this rules
lee and sachi - this is great.
the first part with the arrows - going one way, then going the opposite way - is the easiest to understand explanation of RSS i've seen. i'll be using this in my undergraduate digital journalism class.
For my Dad
I sent this to my dad hoping your illustrated explanation might make more sense than the explanations I try to deliver over the phone. Thanks!
Also, blogged at: Buzzword Compliant.
Thanks!
Mike
Are you a teacher?
If not, you should be! I think I'm ready to tackle the mysterious RSS. Thank you!! Cheryl (former teacher- high school & adults)
Teacher? No.
I've never had any formal training. But my teacher friends say we use some of the same principles.
teaching adult nonespeakears
What are the characteristics of teaching foreign language nonespeakers?
The video on RSS feeds
I must agree with Cheryl I have read several technical papers on RSS fees and this was the fastest easiest basic explanation and set of directions I have seen in a long time! Congrats and I too as a teacher will learn from and use this video with my students and friends. - Kudos!
This is excellent! Is there
This is excellent! Is there a feed for the Common Craft Show?!
(reblogged)
Feed eh?
Good question Duncs! There should be. Lemme see if I can whip one up soon. Thanks.
Loved that brief explanation!
That was awesome! I'm gonna reblog this, too, in hopes more of my friends will understand the power. (via)
So Cool
What a great introduction to RSS, i'll be sure to send my friends and colleagues over who havent yet converted.
New RSS filter service
I would like to suggest a great new site that organizes your RSS feeds.
It employs a bayesian filter for RSS feeds where you can train the filter what you like and
what you don't like. It's free, try it at www.filteredrss.com.
Great! only one problem
Firefox installs with a default setting for subscribing in Firefox Live Bookmarks when you click on an RSS link. Beginners using Firefox won't see the feed preview or code that you show - they'll get a dialog box that lets them add to Live Bookmarks. The way I tell people to get around this is to Right Click, and Copy Link Location, then go to Reader, Add Subscription and paste.
some readers fix this
If you use something like MonkeyChow, there is a little link you click on under Add Feeds that will change the Live Bookmarks setting in Firefox to point to MonkeyChow. So after that, when you click on the little orange icon, you're asked by Firefox if you want to add it to that reader. More info here...
http://www.shokk.com/blog/articles/2006/10/28/firefox-2-0-joins-forces-w...
Be warned that Google Toolbar interferes with this feature of Firefox!
Your video roxx, attensa is the best
I loved this video... I use the Attensa reader, and b/c I browse w/ firefox all i have to do is click the feed icon on my browser toolbar and it auto searches the page for feeds and then I click to add. So only 2 clicks to add a feed. I will never use IE again b/c they do not have this convenient option. ogod yes is rss addictive!
Or, obviously...
you can just change your Firefox preferences to subscribe in your reader when you click ;)
Excellent!
Nice work, Lee and Sachi! Even my cat would get this :)
Haha
My dog too .. Seriously , It's great explaination
Awesome
I really loved the way you explained it. I am a major feeds fan, but I find it a pity that there are still so many people afraid of using them.
Great work!!!
Cute and informative
I've bookmarked the video and will certainly use it to help explain RSS to others. I like the clever delivery style. Keep it up!
Nicely done
Thanks for helping me understand RSS. Oh yea, I already get it. Nice job :)
I posted it to my blog as well.
BTW, love the new CC site. Zeitgeist is a big word.
Great work!
Great job you two!
Well done - thanks!
Great job - I added a link to this on my blog.
Have a nice day.
Thanks, it's really cool
Thanks, it's really cool video to tell the rest of us wha'ts RSS. Did you ever try Anothr.com to see how easy RSS subscription is. You definitely should make a video for them too.
A winner
This is excellent! I've added to my collection of useful overviews to Web2.0 concepts. I've always used the metaphor of a basket to explain the reader - and that you don't have to go out and put the eggs in the basket. The reader does that for you. But the netflix analogy is so apt.
I like the way you did it with video of paper!
Great Video
Love the simplicity. You found the core. ;-)
avenir
I used the Attensa reader of firefox, all i have to do is click the feed icon on my browser toolbar and it auto searches the page for feeds and then I click to add. I will never use IE. Et si vous cherchez un bon site de voyance gratuite and voyance webcam ou simplement une consultation de voyance ou mieux encore une voyance telephone, suivez le lien.
I love it!
Oh my, does the world need more videos like this one! Great job.
If there was one bit of critique I'd offer, it's this: it could be a good idea to warn people that this is just the begining of what they can do with RSS. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like so many people get stuck at the basics and don't even consider more advanced possibilities. (Feed filtering, splicing, scraping, tag feeds for collaboration, etc.) That's a real shame.
That said - great work, very cool. Teaching RSS REALLY needs visuals and I think you've done an awesome job here.
Excellent!
Good How-to content, great work!
Brilliant!
There's a huge need to explain the basics of RSS to get people excited about it and this does it really really well.
Awesome
Awesome video guys. Next maybe you explain Twitter to my wife :-).
Cheers,
Randy Stewart
Nice work! Anyway to embed
Nice work!
Anyway to embed this on our own pages (ala YouTube?)

Not yet in plain English
This isn't yet in plain English- where are the subtitles for the Deaf? Can you make a separate video with subtitles so that we can understand what RSS is all about? This would be greatly appreciated by many.
Good Point
Hi Jared, I really appreciate you bringing up accessibility. This version of the video is an experiment and we do plan to do more in the future. When we do, I'll work to make them more accessible.
Maybe a transcript would help? I'm thinking of a workaround for the short term.
Some technical tips
I took the freedom of making some suggestions on how to beef up your video from a technical side.
Keep in mind that I love what you've done.
Greetings from Norway and a new RSS convert.
Transcript
Jared,
It's not subtitles, but we do have a transcript. Maybe that will help some for now.
Thanks!
I appreciate the subtitled version on dotSUB! I made a blog post about this.
http://jarednevans.typepad.com/blog/2007/05/echoing_noesis_.html
This is really cool
Your explanations about RSS are really crystal clear, thanks for taking the time to do it and sharing it with all of us!
Cheers.
Outstanding!
Great video! I've never delved into the RSS subscription thing because I never knew exactly how it worked or what to do.
Problem solved. Thanks so much.
Very nicely done, but
Very nicely done, but there's one thing that could be confusing: to most folks who are new to RSS or even "this whole bloggy thing", the phrase "copy the URL" means nothing.
I know, it's unfortunate, but it would only take a few more seconds to explain.
way too awesome!!
found out about this vid from boagworld.com. One of the best and most entertaining things I've seen in a long time! practically had me in tears -- I had to pass it onto my co-workers! If people don't know how to use RSS is after watching this, then they have other serious problems. And there's an idea from comments here -- maybe people don't know what a "Blog" or "Wiki" or "copy the URL" are (how unfortunate, but could be true). That would be amusing future episodes...

New Site
I'm a convert! I had been doing it the long way for so long. I got set up on bloglines, digg, del.icio.us yesterday and the bloglines is already paying real dividends. Only one of the blogs I read regularly does not have a feed and I am going to email them a request for one. Oh I can feel my sanity coming back.
Not sure if this is appropriate for a video blog such as this one for rss, but I have been wanting to dive into the personal blog pool and am unsure which app would be best for me, Word Press, Blogger, Drupal etc. I am wondering what the features are and what would make it easiest. I've gotten as far as registering a domain. It seems basic, but seeing as this rss video has lit Common Craft a fire, I am thinking there is a great interest in this "Plain English" stuff. Keep up the great work!!
Great work!!!
Your really did great with this video! I am sending it around to all my friends. Outstanding!
Great work!
You made it so simple, even my parents could understand it.
Great Video
Although it does not feature us :-( but I still think it is a great video for our blogs site and we have put it up. Please do check it out at www.iyoype.com
That was freakin wonderful!
Never mind the content...
The presentation was perfect!
I fully intend to "borrow" your technique for my inhouse staff training videos. Full credit will be given to you!
Nicely done!
Very Nice!
I got here through Newley.com. The only thing wrong with this video is that you didn't make it last month when I was trying to explain RSS to my department!
Excellent work.
great!
thanks, I blog the video and put it on my blog's feed subscription page.
Positive Re-enforcement
Thanks so much for all the positive feedback. We've buzzing here at Common Craft - so far the video has exceeded our expectations by a longshot. Now it's time to start thinking about show #2. Thanks again!
Splendidly simple
Well done! My grateful thanks.
Desktop Readers?
Why no mention of desktop readers?
desktop readers
Hi Peter. In the interest of time and simplicity, there was only one type of reader we could cover. The web-based readers are generally easier for less technical people, from my experience anyway.
well done
/salute
perfect for my pres.
I am so using this during my upcoming prsentation to principals. My topic is what we can get out of blogs & podcasts. This is short, to the point, and will allow me expand on other parts of my presentation, THANKS!
Simple x2
Lee, you and Sachi did two things really well:
1. You explained a concept that is difficult for those new to these technologies.
2. You showed how a simple video without spending a fortune or getting lost in fancy effects can still be an engaging learning experience.
Still glad I have been subsribed to your RSS feeds for years!
Great work Lee and Sachi
Lee and Sachi ~
Love it!
I'm sharing it to my mom who at 85 is learning quite a lot about Web 2.0. Found the link, and if ok with you, sharing it on my blog as well.
Excellent presentation style
Love the way you demonstrated this.
Very effective.
Thanks
Great education for my non-tech friends
Love the power of RSS but like it's simplicity even more. Great job putting the core details into a medium my mother can understand!
Wow, amazing video. I like
Wow, amazing video. I like the way you make this video, very precise, very cool :)
Favourited :)

Paper Works
Hey Sachi and Lee .. this is so cool. Thanks! Would love to see something similar on ROI of blogging - is a concept I find most difficult to communicate to organizations and I do believe a Paperworks demo will be great!
Aprendizaje lúdico
Qué forma tan original y sencilla de explicar algo que la mayoría de las veces se nos hace complicado.
Saludos
RSS... the new black
I SO blogged this.
Magnificent!
loved it!
This video is really cool! Will look forward to more such videos in the coming days...what about one that explains the basic concept of blogging?
Simply awesome.
Great video, blogged, shared, and hopefully some people learned about RSS.
Free Format?
Hi Lee.
I've been trying to watch this video but am unable to. Even the latest version of VLC can't seem to play anything but the audio (i've tried both the .flv and .wmv files). Is there a free version of this video somewhere? .ogg would be ideal.
I would like to share this video with my students during class time but we don't use proprietary software.
Are we simply out of luck?
Try Blip or You Tube?
Hi Peter. I'm sorry you're having problems. Maybe you can try the video on Blip.tv ? The video also exists on You Tube. Hope this helps...
Thanks!
As of April 2007, one can extract Youtube videos (by various means) and play the file locally using VLC version 0.8.5 or greater. This worked for me. Now I can retain my sainthood. ;)
Thanks for pointing to this resource and thanks for making this simple and effective video. I'll be using this with my students when I do my lessons on RSS.
Homerun
Your explanation of RSS is a hit out of the ballpark! Congratulations on a job well done!
Make a video like yours in Brazil
Hey man, I started my blog a few days... and a lot a people ask me to explain what feeds is.
I'm thinking now, to make a video like yours, in brazil :)
would you be bored with my idea ?
If you have doubt, i will give the desearved crédits!!!!
Since now thanks man, and success with your blog !

RSS in Plain English
That's fantastic! Thanks, Lee. My friend Tom has been explaining this to me for years, and I understand it ... but I'll be darned if I can explain it well to anyone else. Now I don't have to. I'll just refer them to your clever video.
I'll be sharing this, for sure!
Cool and fun!
Hi Sachi, hi Lee.
Great work guys. Wondering how much time you spent preparing this video, and how many takes it took to get it on 'tape'.
Concept is cool, looking forward to new episodes :)
Helpful
thanks for making this, it helped me open the dialog with a client and they seem to get the benefits of implementing it on their site now.
This Rocks! Thanks So Much!
Check it out in action! On my homepage, entitled "Subscribe to my feed? Huh?"
Oh, I just love it :-D
Looking forward to more non-techie videos to help me and my audience live a happier, easier life here on the web!
To our success & empowerment,
Ponn
Fabu!
This was a great explanation of RSS feeds! RSS is totally addictive and I'm just hoping my supervisor believes the "but it's for work" line!
Thanks for the fun video to
Thanks for the fun video to help explain RSS in simple terms.
Cheers
Thanks for this video and transcription in french
Hello !
I would like to thank you for this amazing video ! It is so simple but I enables everybody to understand how rss works !
I made a french version that you can find here : http://www.vincent-durmont.com/?r=art&id=132
It is not exactly the same words or the same slides but I the idea is the same !
So thank you for your work !
Dvins.
French Version is Missing Something
Updated: Dvins (Vincent) has updated his video and the situation below has been resolved.
<cross posted from a comment posted on Vincent's blog>
Hi Vincent.
I suppose imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. And I'm happy that my video inspired you. Also, since you left a nice comment on my site, I can tell you see nothing wrong with your video. So, this comment might be a surprise to you.
I know that your intent was good and you seek to provide a service to your countrymen. Understood.
However, I'm not happy about you presenting the exact same video without mention to the original as part of your video. I know that you link to Common Craft in the entry, but the video itself is what gets viewed and shared and when this happens, it appears to be your work 100%.
I wish that you had done like my German and Italian friends and asked me about doing a translated version before producing the video. When in doubt, ask. Here's how Marcus in Munich did it:
http://turi-2.blog.de/2007/04/25/rss_feeds_fur_dummies~2161387
We put the video into the world as a free service, and welcome people to share it. We want it shared and would love to see it translated into many, many languages and enjoy working with people to make this happen.
However, as the creators of the video and the concept, we expect the translators to present the video as a translation of an _original_ work. When the video says "Dvin's Blog Presents", it becomes YOUR work and not the original. This is unethical and I don't think it represents honest and respectful blog practices.
If you feel that you'd like to change this situation, I would encourage you to include a slide _in_ your video that says "translated from an original video by Common Craft - www.commoncraft.com"
Or, ask me for the original and add a French soundtrack over our video.
fantantic and clear video
Thank you very much for this video tutorial.
Simplicity is brilliant!
Maybe you can create ones for social bookmarking, social networking, affiliates, etc
start a whole lot of tutorials in this manner.
well done guys :)
great, but add del.icio.us tagged searches?
Great, quick intro. My only constructive suggestion is that subscriptions to del.icio.us tag searches be included to cover that other web-category: static web pages that offer no RSS subscriptions.
Something is missing ? Yes you're right !
I am so sorry for this mistake.
I didn't want to steal your job but now that you point it out, it seems that I did it..
I just wanted to give this video to french people as fast as I could and I made this terrible mistake : I don't really know what I can say to excuse me : you must be very angry against me and you should be right !
As I read your comment on my blog, I modified the video. You can see the new version on my blog and if there is anything wrong in this video, just send me a mail and I will change it or delete it if you prefer.
My aim wasn't to steal your job, I don't really know what I can do or say to make you trust me...
I hope that you will like this new video and I am -again- sorry.
Dvins,
sorry.
Thanks to Dvins
Dvins,
I accept your apology. I know that you did not mean for it to appear as it did. I do not feel any bad feelings toward you. :)
One small thing... the URL is commoncraft.com (without the "s"), as it appears in the video. Thanks.
Nice
Really nice and short and usefull and \o/
Thx
just an opinion
RSS is nice, but frankly -- I *like* browsing. I find the process to be enjoyable in the same way that I find bookstores enjoyable. I like exploring the web, and I like the variety of presentation.
Just my 2 cents...
Free PSP Games
Link coming up
I'm SOLD on RSS, and now you've given me an easy way to explain it to my un-converted friends and readers. Thanks!
Great for my clients!
Thanks so much for simplifying RSS for non-bloggy people. Many of my colleagues and clients don't read blogs because they don't understand them or don't have time. This should help tremendously! You guys rock!
Awesome work!
This is a great way for me to help my clients and co-workers really understand what they're missing if they don't engage in RSS.
Well done!
Translated into Romanian
Hey, congrats on teh video, good work. I translated your video into Romanian.
I'm taking your video to Active Rain
I blog at a real estate network called Active Rain. It's got like 28,000 members, most of whom are real estate agents. They soak up anything and everything having to do with blogging. Give them the least little tidbit and you're the hero.
Well, you're gonna be a rock star with this! I'll point them back to you certainly and embed the vid in a post. Just watch the accolades roll in.
An even faster RSS "reader"
If you need an RSS reader that makes it even more faster to read the latest news on specific subjects, take a look at the sites below. New feed items on high quality feeds appear instantly in a (timezone neutral!) chronologial order.

THANKS!
Thanks Paul for guiding me over here! that explanation was pretty amazing.....where was this when I needed it a couple of months ago - the whole concept was Chinese to me.
Definitely the best way to explain to our clients
We've just upgraded our website at ByTheOwner.com with rss feed alerts. I'll forward my clients to your video if they have any questions.
This is the best, thanks!
Great:)
Hi,
I found your video via http://www.chrismlindsey.com/, and was astounded that someone hadn't come up with this concept before! I run a website where the majority of the readers wouldn't have a clue where to begin for RSS and I think this video will help them.
However, I hope this doesn't sound too rude, but I was wondering if your narration could be done directly into the microphone? Although I did enjoy watching your video, I did get a little bit put-off by the 'hollow space' sound (not quite sure how to describe this) and believe this could be overcome through the use of the narration *over* the video.
Thank you again for creating this video :D I hope you don't mind my comments!
Kind Regards
Flick
This video is better than my teacher
I'm studing for the exame of web content, taht will be tomorrow, and this video is better than the italian lesson of my teacher about feed rss.,
"Roba da non crederci, grazie!!"
RSS video explanation
Pure Class! You've inspired a whole new way I'm going to deliver lectures - Black Board watch out!

here is the movie dubbed in italian:

Thanks Lee & C.
BRILLIANT.
BRILLIANT.
Again, Thanks
It has been a humbling experience to see all your kind words about our little video. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Thank you!
We loved this so much, we shared it with the librarians in our region to better explain RSS and why it's swell.
Thanks!
Good Work!
Thx - This should help some of "the others" that need a little more of a handholding.
Thanks You !
I Love u ! Thank you again for creating this photos
See you soon . I'll comeback !
Readers Video
Thanks for the information. I'll try it.
Well done - simple & visual
Great job and very creative.
Succinct, clear and most of all, fun.
This was really well done. Great work. The format is really fun.
My suggestions? Keep explaining in the same way other aspects of Web 2.0, such as tagging, mash-ups, folksonomy, tag clouds, Wikis, services like Digg, del.icio.us, flickr, feed burner, etc.
Too Late
If only I had seen your video earlier. I recently spent a weekend trying to explain RSS in writing. I am an educator and I also see the potential of RSS. Thanks for making this I will be passing it along to my students and parents.
For those who would like the written explanation of RSS check out my post
What is RSS: How & Why to Subscribe at edvibes.com
Fantastic
This is fantastic - will be passing along to all those people who look at me blankly even when I've explained things as simply as possible. The visual approach is so much more effective.
Good resource!
You've made an excellent video! I've added a link to it in a wiki that I'm building called Library 2.0 In 15 Minutes A Day You can see it under the RSS section
Thanks!
RSS in simple language
Liked it alot. I liked that it's a visual approach to something that's hard to explain conceptually. I also liked that the video format used paper printouts, rather than showing a monitor screen w/ the various websites. Not only is the presentation of the information faster, but it appeals to my paper orientation. I learned something about RSS and understand it better. I'm not exactly a Luddite but I might even try RSS out.
BRAVO!
This is just brilliant. Love it, love it, love it.
And, would love to have you on as a guest to Capture the Conversation podcast.

muchísimas gracias. Un modo excelente de explicar el uso de estas nuevas tecnologías. Además de la oportunidad de leer la traducción.

Gracias desde México

thanks
great. awesome work - no I don't have to try to explain RSS to my friends anymore :)
Great Video!
I was a late adopter of RSS. Google Reader rocks. This video rocks.
Excellent!
Truly an excellent video! Simple, entertaining, funny, and informative! I've blogged about it and encouraged my readers to come check it out. :-)
Great job!
thanks for putting this together!
great how to
I have embedded the DotSub version, for italain translation.
Tks. for this great video!!!
RSS Feed
I have a blogspot blog. The URL is above. I have been asked by several people to put RSS on it, so they can subscribe. I have no clue on how to do this. Any help for me?
Great video
Thanks for that video! I've used it on the Travellerspoint blog to give our members a great rundown of how they can use RSS. Thanks!
Excellent introduction!
Blogged. Great job on the video! But what's up with all the trackback spam?
Yippee!
That was great! Now, how about something that explains all the new Digg, Delicious, and whatnots??
Thanks!
Keri
